Recommended Business Plan Books

Unfortunately we can't actually pass on any recommendations because none of the books we have ever reviewed are going to help someone that hasn't written a plan to actually write one. And why is that? Well all the books available on the subject of business planning fall into one or more of the following categories :

  • The book is full of jargon and is difficult to understand
  • They are just too long - they should be getting to the point much quicker - the trouble with these books is that they are trying to encompass absolutely everything that a new or existing business owner should know - that's fine to a point, but we wonder just how many people have completed a successful plan following any of the popular books ? We suspect most get put off and don't even put pen to paper.
  • Understanding finances just got harder - the parts people have difficulty with are generally the numbers - try and understand how to calculate everything here and you are lost. The books should really contain a nice spreadsheet to help develop a plan

So that's why we recommend the following book - it's all about starting a business which includes notes on a business plan but is written by people who know about small business development.

Start your own business covers everything including the all important funding elements. It also discusses the current economic climate and whether or not this is a good time to set up a new company. Of course there are many pros and cons but this book is our recommendation if you are thinking of starting up any type of business in the UK at the present time.
