Your web page should reflect your key words

Search engine robots do not just pick up the above tags - they have a look through your site as well. Check you have also done the following :

A: Put your key words into your site

The words you have described above as key words must also appear in your site. So for 'business plan' we would use this phrase in the body of the web page when describing our services. Use 2/3 times. Now you will need not to spam your page and ensure you have variations on your theme - such as businesses, plans, planning etc.

B: Put your key words into your headers

H1 tag etc.. This shows the robot that the key word is important as it is in a header.

C: Put your key words in your linking URLS

You will link to other pages in your site. Ensure your key words are in some of the links.

D: Ensure you describe your images

A computer can not read an image so ensure you describe every image with the 'alt' tag.

Submit to the most used search engines

Yahoo - list under the 'suggest a site' in the category you want to be listed in (www.yahoo.co.uk) (free listing)

Looksmart - powers MSN search ($149)

Web robots

Google - www.google.co.uk/addurl.html (free listing)

Inktomi drives AOL, MSN and hotbot - ($50)

Altavista uk.altavista.com/submit/home (free listing)

Also list yourself in any industry specific listings or associations you belong to.

Be patient with the free listings as they can take 6 -8 weeks or more to list you. Check frequently to ensure you are still listed. Re-submit every month or two when you change your site. Web robots do come back every 30-60 days in any case. If you have a high page rank they will come back possibly daily. Ensure you have good, original content and update it frequently.

The easiest way to get listed is to get a link from another site - when the robot visits that site it will pick up your link. This also boosts your popularity as you have received a vote from a site already listed - very important.
