Getting links to your web site

Last time we looked at how important it is to get links pointing to your website to improve your position in the search engine results pages.

This week we look at how to find links and manage the links you have got to ensure that they are still active.

Finding and managing links

There are two elements to getting and keeping links to your site

Finding them and ensuring they stay on the site in question

You may find that some webmasters take down links after a while and if you are not checking you may not know.

The best way to find links is to see who is linking to your main competitors:

1: These links have put your competitors above you so they can do the same for you

2: Because the site has already linked to your competitor there's a good chance they will link to you.

There's a piece of automated software that can find strong links and tell you if they are still linking to your site.

This is where you need to take time and effort.

You need to visit the site in question to find out more about them.

Find the page you want your link to be placed on.

Write to a named contact (see the contact page of the site) and address the recipient by their first name.

Say you would like to swap links because this will benefit you both in terms of web content and traffic.

Show them where you have placed their link on YOUR website and where you would like yours adding.

Provide exact HTML of the link you want them to place on their site.

Follow up if you do not here from them in a week - then follow up again a week later.

If you hear no response then delete your link.
